A Purple Passion – Blueberry Chia Smoothie

Just a quickie post of the recipe for this morning’s breakfast, a mouth-watering, nutrient-dense smoothie fortified with a healthy dose of protein. I’ve grown a bit tired of my usual green smoothies and I just had one of my Strawberry Mocha Smoothies for an afternoon snack yesterday, so I wanted something a bit “out of the ordinary” this morning. It’s not that I don’t thoroughly enjoy all of the smoothies I make, I just needed one that would excite my taste buds and also be nutritious. I hadn’t indulged in blueberries in a long minute and since I happened to have some frozen ones on hand, I decided to give ‘em a go. I’m quite fond of the color purple (which symbolizes royalty, as well as magic and mystery) in all of its various shades and these little edible blue gems certainly produced a beautiful, seductively inviting hue, indeed!
Blueberries possess a wealth of health benefits. According to many research sources, they have the highest antioxidants capacity of all fresh fruit (among other things), are a good source of vitamin C, fiber and iron and they’re only about 80 calories per cup. Chia seeds pack quite a punch, too. In addition to being a good non-fish source of omega-3, they also provide a sense of fullness and help to curb food cravings. A delicious anytime, the chia seeds and protein make it an excellent post-workout rejuvenator. It definitely speeds up my recovery time after my intense workouts.
I initially took this image to post in my Colors of My Life collection album on Facebook (my FB peeps know how I do), but since it generated a few recipe requests, I decided to go ahead and blog this delicious and simple concoction. So, this one’s for Courtney, Portland, Sasha and the rest. Cheers!
Blueberry Chia Smoothie Recipe
Source: Just my mix!
Serves 1 to 2 | Vegan
Mise en place:
2 cups almond milk, cold
1 cup blueberries, frozen
1 tablespoon chia seeds
1 scoop vanilla vegan protein*
1 tablespoon agave, or to taste (optional)
Blend all ingredients on high till smooth. Enjoy!
*Recipe Notes: Non-vegan feel free to use whatever vanilla protein you like. I use Sun Warrior Blend, which is already sweetened with stevia, so I didn’t need additional sweetener. It also depends on how sweet your blueberries are.
